            &lt;h4 class="style1"&gt;Welcome to the Inaugural Issue of the SIUE Parent Connection&lt;/h4&gt;&#13;
            &lt;p&gt;Dear Parent:&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
            &lt;p&gt;I am pleased to introduce and welcome you to the &amp;ldquo;Parent Connection,&amp;rdquo; designed to provide parents the information that will keep you &amp;ldquo;connected&amp;rdquo; as your son or daughter begins or continues his or her education at SIUE.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
            &lt;p&gt;This e-newsletter will focus on issues parents have told us are interesting or helpful to them as they support their child&amp;rsquo;s educational efforts. Each issue will highlight a particular topic ranging such as financial aid, campus safety, and adjustments your child and yourself will experience through the college years.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;

            &lt;h4&gt;&lt;span class="style2"&gt;Welcome Week 2004 &amp;mdash; &amp;ldquo;&lt;em&gt;SIUE: The True Story of 13,000 Students&amp;rdquo;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/h4&gt;&#13;
            &lt;p&gt;Welcome Week activities at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville begin with Move-in Day August 20 and conclude with the annual Edwardsville Block Party in downtown Edwardsville August 27. The activities are designed to greet new and returning students to SIUE and to promote an atmosphere of welcome and involvement. The theme, &lt;em&gt;SIUE: The True Story of 13,000 Students,&lt;/em&gt; promotes the concept of welcoming students to the &amp;ldquo;real world&amp;rdquo; of higher education.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
            &lt;p&gt;A special invitation is extended to freshmen to attend New Freshman Convocation, August 21, where they will be introduced to the academic community and oriented to ways to succeed throughout the year. Additionally, students are invited to join SIUE&amp;rsquo;s new Chancellor, Vaughn Vandegrift, and Edwardsville Mayor Gary Niebur for a complimentary Dairy Queen&amp;reg; Blizzard during the annual Ice Cream Social, Wednesday, August 25. Along with these events, students are encouraged to attend the following Welcome Week activities:&lt;/p&gt;&#13;

            &lt;p&gt;&lt;span class="style3"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;New Freshman Convocation Ceremony , 9&amp;ndash;10 a.m.&lt;br /&gt; Saturday, August 21, Vadalabene Center&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; All new freshmen are invited to attend a formal welcome focusing on the academic learning environment.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
            &lt;p&gt;&lt;span class="style3"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Student Organization/University Information Tables&lt;/strong&gt; , &lt;strong&gt;10 a.m. &amp;ndash; 2 p.m.&lt;br /&gt; Monday, August 23 and Tuesday, August 24, Stratton Quadrangle&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; Students are encouraged to stop by between classes to get information about programs and services offered by student organizations and University departments, and for fun, entertainment, giveaways, prize drawings, and more.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
            &lt;p&gt;&lt;span class="style6"&gt;Morris University Center Art Gallery Reception&lt;br /&gt; Monday, August 23, 2&amp;ndash; 6:30 p.m.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt; Art Gallery , 2nd Floor Morris University Center&lt;br /&gt; University Museums invites students to join them for refreshments as they kick off a year of great art exhibitions.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
            &lt;p&gt;&lt;span class="style3"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Evening Student Receptions, 4:30&amp;ndash;6:30 p.m.&lt;br /&gt; Monday, August 23, First Floor, Peck Hall&lt;br /&gt; Tuesday, August 24, First Floor Lobby, Founders Hall&lt;br /&gt;Wednesday, August 25, First Floor Atrium, Art &amp;amp; Design Building&lt;br /&gt;Thursday, August 26, 7&amp;ndash;9 p.m., Atrium, Engineering Building&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; Evening students are invited to enjoy refreshments before class, receive information and giveaways, and experience a welcoming atmosphere.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
            &lt;p&gt;&lt;span class="style3"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Merchants&amp;rsquo; Fair&lt;/strong&gt; , &lt;strong&gt;10 a.m. &amp;ndash; 2 p.m.&lt;br /&gt; Wednesday, August 25,&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;strong&gt;Goshen Lounge, Morris University Center&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to take a break between classes and visit merchant booths for fun, entertainment, giveaways, prize drawings, and more.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
            &lt;p&gt;&lt;span class="style3"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Ice Cream Social, Noon&lt;br /&gt;Wednesday, August 25, Goshen Lounge, Morris University Center&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; Meet Edwardsville Mayor Gary Niebur and SIUE&amp;rsquo;s new Chancellor, Vaughn Vandegrift, for a complimentary 5 oz. Dairy Queen&amp;reg; Blizzard and listen to the sounds of the Army Jazz Band.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
            &lt;p&gt;&lt;span class="style3"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;11th Annual &lt;em&gt;Rocky Horror Picture Show&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;, &lt;strong&gt;8&amp;ndash;10 p.m.&lt;br /&gt; Thursday, August 26, Meridian Ballroom, Morris University Center&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; Participants are encouraged to dress in vintage clothing and join in the fun featuring the classic movie and all the props.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
            &lt;p&gt;&lt;span class="style3"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Ice Cream Cabaret, 11:30 a.m. &amp;ndash; 1 p.m.&lt;br /&gt;Friday, August 27, Meridian Ballroom&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; The University community is encouraged to bring their lunch and build an ice cream sundae while enjoying entertainment performed in a cabaret style setting by faculty, staff, and students Price: Students w/valid SIUE ID: $3; Faculty/Staff : $5. Proceeds will be used pay for the ice cream and to support the University Staff Senate Scholarship.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
            &lt;p&gt;&lt;span class="style3"&gt;&lt;strong&gt;After Hours: Edwardsville Block Party, 7 p.m. &amp;ndash; Midnight&lt;br /&gt; Friday, August 27, Downtown Edwardsville&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt; The Edwardsville Block Party features live band Son of Glam, Z107.7 Radio Party, carnival games and activities, and tons of local food options.&lt;/p&gt;&#13;
            &lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt; These are just a few of the welcome activities scheduled for the first week of fall semester.
