<p>For Ryne Peters, adjusting to college life wasn’t always easy, but building a close-knit group of friends and classmates was all it took for him to feel right at home at SIUE.</p>
<p>As a freshman, Ryne chose to live in one of the Focused Interest Communities on campus. These housing options group students with similar interests and fields of study together so that they may better support each other through the adjustments and challenges of college.</p>
<p>“I really enjoy spending time with my family at home in Decatur, Ill,, but I’ve met so many great friends in the residence halls and in class that it feels like school is my second home,” said Ryne.</p>
<p>Ryne is majoring in nursing, a decidedly challenging field of study. He has found that support from his classmates and professors has gotten him through even the toughest classes.</p>
<p>“I wasn’t always the best at chemistry, especially freshman year, but when I had trouble I could always get one-on-one help,” said Ryne. “I felt like my professor could connect with me individually.”</p>
<p>That kind of encouragement has helped Ryne get to where he is now, starting his clinical work at area hospitals. So far, he has had the opportunity to get hands-on experience in a variety of specialties, including pediatrics and obstetrics.</p>
<p>“The experience has been amazing. My clinical instructors have been a big help through the whole process,” said Ryne. “They know when to push you to do better and when to step in for guidance.”</p>
<p>Something else Ryne says he really appreciates about his professors is that they each have their own extensive real-world clinical experience.</p>
<p>“In the future, I want to continue my studies and eventually become a nurse anesthetist,” said Ryne. “I want to be a high-quality care giver like the instructors I’m learning from now.”</p>
