Fermentation Lab

Fermentation Lab

The Fermentation Laboratory at the NCERC provides:

  • Flask scale fermentation available in 250mL, 1L, and 5L.
  • Simulation of the ethanol production process.
  • The ability to test a wide variety of feedstocks and fermentation ingredients.

The NCERC Fermentation Laboratory offers a state-of-the-art environment for the evaluation of potential fermentation products at flask-scale and in 5-liter fermentors. The lab provides testing of ideas, products and technologies to determine their potential incorporation into the ethanol industry. Ideas, products and technologies are tested for the best inputs, the most efficient processes and the most valuable outputs.

Serving a clientele that consists of individuals, and small and large companies, the Center tests processed corn, alternative feedstocks and other products that could potentially improve process efficiency and reduce and/or remove the limitations experienced by the ethanol industry. Fermentation lab personnel work closely with clients to set up an experimental design and methodology to optimize product evaluation. Fermentations are carried out under conditions that closely simulate plant operations.

Ethanol producers from around the world use the Center's fermentation lab to find ways to increase feedstock-to-ethanol yields. They also use the lab to review the composition -- and corresponding value -- of ethanol co-products.

Now more than ever, efficiency and optimization matter in moving the renewable fuels industry forward.
