Research & Technical Activities
- The month of December was occupied by the third challenging client trials involving an Advanced Biofuel. It went exceedingly well, although we find that there are still some kinks to be worked out. The client will return in February 2011 to hopefully work those kinks out in another one-fermenter trial. All goes well the client will return in April and August 2011.
- A funded project to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of lysine digestibility in DDGS. The co-PI finished their part and a final report is in the preparation.
- A funded project to provide proximate and amino acid contents in DDGS from IL and nearby states. An AAFCO Check Sample was added to the QA/QC plan and a modification on particle size was implemented.
- A funded project to compare various hydrolysis procedures for amino acid testing in animal feed. Hydrolysate samples have been collected from the lab participants and analysis is on the way.
- A funded project to study the enzymatic enhancement of downstream corn oil recovery in a corn dry grind process. The pilot plant trial is scheduled to start in March of 2011 and the preparation for the trial has started.
- A manuscript on the method development for the quantitation of the biocide in fermentation matrix has been finished.
Pilot Plant and Facility Updates:
- Fractionation:

- Contractors start work January 4, 2011 through March 16, 2011.
- Facilities and Process Installation
- Contractor work starts late 1Q 2011 or early 2Q 2011.
- Fermenter Pumps:

- Work on recycle piping starts January 3, 2011 and will be complete January 15, 2011.
- Laboratory Fume Hoods:

- Detailed design will be complete by January 28, 2011
Outreach and Community Activities
- NCERC hosted a group of R&D scientists to explore the collaboration opportunity on utilizing NIR for amino acid testing in DDGS.
- NCERC attended and participated in the Coalition for Plant and Life Science meeting held in St. Louis, MO.
