Assistant Director for Biofuels Process Research

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUE) and the NCERC are seeking ambitious and highly motivated candidates to fill the position of Assistant Director for Biofuels Process Research. This individual will be responsible for directing pilot-plant studies at the Center. The incumbent will provide technical supervision for all client and grant funded pilot scale projects and research studies; participate and supervise the engineering design of all process modifications needed to meet client or grant funded objectives; identify equipment and instrumentation needed to allow the Center to meet the research needs of funded projects, working with Research Engineers and the Center management to specify equipment and obtain quotes from vendors; coordinate pilot plant client trials with Assistant Director of Biological Research, Assistant Director of Analytical Research, Research Engineers, Operating Coordinators and Scientific Analysts; ensure that all milestones are met in preparation of pilot-plant studies, appropriate data is collected and data quality objectives are achieved during and after research studies; operational, process control, and data acquisition challenges are resolved. The Assistant Director will actively seek and write applications for competitive grants and contractual research service agreements; collaborate with internal and external partners to develop research proposals and research services agreements, develop protocols and provide reports to clients and funding agencies; work with the Center personnel to write and update standard operation procedures (SOPs) to ensure safe and reliable operation of the pilot plant.

Requirements:

The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in chemical, biochemical, agricultural engineering or closely related field. The successful candidate should have working knowledge and experience in process engineering; ability to write research proposals, study protocols, and project reports; ability to communicate clearly with clients, funding agencies, plant and laboratory staff; ability to design pilot-scale research studies to efficiently meet client objectives and analyze quantitative and qualitative data from those studies; familiarity with equipment for pumping and conveyance of liquids and solids; familiarity with equipment and instrumentation for process control and mass-flow measurement.
