Advanced Biofuels Research at NCERC

NCERC is a world-class leader in fermentation research for the production of liquid chemical intermediates and transportation fuels. Through its Advanced Biofuels Initiative, NCERC has shifted its focus to facilitating the commercialization of new technologies for more effective advanced biofuel production.

The NCERC currently serves the advanced biofuels sector by conducting highly-specialized research, including the propagation of microorganisms and demonstration-scale production of drop-in fuels. The scale of past research has ranged in volume from petri dish to 6,000 gallon tanks. With the recent addition of new intermediate-scale fermentors, the NCERC can now conduct experiments at scales that are desirable for public or private research in the expanding field of “third generation” biofuels. These additions allow the NCERC to continue conducting research that:

  • Improves energy conservation and/or efficiency
  • Adds value to biofuel  co-products
  • Replaces fossil fuel derived energy with renewable energy resources
  • Utilizes fractionation
  • Utilizes direct cellulosic conversion
  • Utilizes corn fiber conversion (from fractionated materials)
  • Demonstrates a wide variety of technologies for next generation biofuels production

These additional capabilities will result in a positive impact on the development of energy-saving technologies to reduce the carbon footprint of advanced biofuels production.

The Fermentation Suite at NCERC

The complete fermentation suite consists of three portions:  a “small scale” suite with three to four fermentors of 20L capacity; an “intermediate scale” of two fermentors with 150L capacity and a “large scale” with two 1500L fermentors. Due to the wide variety of process conditions are encountered at NCERC, our system has maximum process flexibility.
