The Speech-Language Pathology Program will be hosting Open Houses on Friday, March 30, 2012 from 9:00-3:00, and Friday, April 6, 2012 from 9:00-3:00. During each open house, tours of the program and clinic will be offered and graduate students and faculty will be available to answer any questions. The SIUE graduate program in speech-language pathology is accredited by the Council of Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
A career as a speech-language pathologist or audiologist is extremely rewarding, and the need for professionals in these fields is expected to increase over the next decade. Opportunities in a variety of work settings are numerous and include educational facilities, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, home health, colleges and universities, to name just a few.
The graduate program in Speech-Language Pathology combines classroom instruction, research and practical experiences. A full range of courses and practicum opportunities prepare students to work with a variety of individuals with communication disorders in a variety of work settings.
The Program operates a Speech-Language-Hearing Center that provides intervention and assessment for children and adults with a wide range of communication problems. The first floor of the Center, located in Founders Hall, includes eight fully equipped treatment rooms and an observation suite. The Audiology Suite located on the third floor of Founders Hall includes two sound booths and a lab area for audiological assessment and specialty hearing assessments. In addition, the Speech-Language-Hearing Center provides outreach programs for individuals needing alternative and augmentative communication and provides a supportive conversation group for individuals with aphasia. Graduate students in Speech-Language Pathology, under certified supervisors and faculty, provide all the intervention and assessments completed in the Speech-Language-Hearing Center.
The graduate program in speech-language pathology also offers unique opportunities for practicum experiences off-campus. The program has agreements with hospitals, agencies, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, and educational facilities in Illinois and Missouri—all exemplary and some that are internationally known. The program can provide students with exceptional experiences with children and adults with neurological disorders, cranial facial anomalies, hearing impairments, autism, pervasive developmental disorders, aphasia, stuttering and voice disorders. The career outlook for speech-language pathologists continues to be very positive. One hundred percent of students graduating with a master's degree in speech-language pathology from SIUE are employed within the first year of graduation, many before they graduate.
