READING

Modeling Appropriate Reading Strategies
Teachers can model appropriate reading strategies by regularly reading aloud to their students. This can be accomplished through both planned and unplanned read alouds.

Conveying Understanding of Thought
Part of what teachers do is to provide information for their students. How they go about doing that is important since it demonstrates to students the many ways to convey the meaning they gleaned through reading.

Reading for Different Purposes
It is important for teachers to help readers in the classroom understand the many purposes for reading.


WRITING

Clarity
The teacher is the most important communicator in the classroom. It is therefore important to model clear, concise, and correct writing.

Modes of Writing
Writing takes many forms. In order for students to be effective writers, the teacher needs to provide demonstrations and opportunities for writing in all of the different modes.

Writing for Different Purposes
It is important for teachers to model the many purposes for writing. This can be done through demonstration as well as direct instruction.



SPEAKING & LISTENING

Clarity
Teachers provide powerful models for students; they learn much by watching and listening to what their teachers do and say. It is important, then for teachers to be careful to provide a model of speaking and listening that they want students to follow.

Appropriate Use
Teachers should model for students the appropriate uses of speaking and listening, and students should be allowed to engage in a wide variety of uses.

S&L for Different Purposes
We speak and listen to accomplish a wide variety of purposes. It is important for you teachers to model and allow students opportunities to talk and listen for many purposes.
