Teacher Certification: after successfully completing an approved program of study and passing the Illinois Assessment of Professional Teaching Exam (104), the Content Area Reading Specialist Exam (176), and the Basic Skills Exam (096), students will earn an Illinois Type 10 Reading Specialist Certificate for kindergarten through grade 12.
The Master's Degree and Post-Master's Certificate Literacy programs qualify graduates to be a literacy/reading specialist, coach, or language arts coordinator, as well as a highly knowledgeable classroom teacher.
SIUE has the only International Reading Association approved literacy program in the region, with highly qualified literacy faculty who provide authentic critical thinking experiences for the literacy candidates to develop the knowledge and dispositions to become literacy leaders and grow professionally.
Our graduates are in great demand as school districts are in need of certified reading specialists.
The general requirements for admission and retention for this program are the same as for the Graduate School. In addition, applicants must possess a teaching certificate that can be renewed in the State of Illinois.
