Professor

Computer Management and Information Systems

Email: joemoor@siue.edu

Ph.D., Indiana University, Management
M.S., Illinois State University, Psychology
B.A., Millikin University, Mathematics

Dr. Moore applies her industry experience, PMP® credential, and her studies in human behavior to teach project management (CMIS 540 and CMIS 535).

CMIS 540 Project Management Fundamentals and Best Practices covers the basics of initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling and -- when you're lucky! -- closing a project. Students in this class work together as a team, taking on roles of team member, team leader, project analyst, and project manager. A recent class was charged with a project to create two podcasts that project managers would find valuable and entertaining. See what you think!

The Tell-Tale Project, by Edgar Allan PMO Wildcat Offense in Project Management

The CMIS 535 PM Standard Processes course helps students prepare for the PMP certification exam. The CMIS 535 PMP Wall of Fame was established in March 2010 to recognize CMIS 535 alumni who went on to achieve PMP certification! On a related note, one of our CMIS 535 students created a diagram of the PMBOK standard processes that classmates have found helpful in preparing for the PMP exam. You may want to visit this PMP process diagram.

Dr. Moore also enjoys teaching a few sections of the capstone course for CMIS undergraduates (CMIS 470), injecting project management practices into that class. And to keep the programmer synapses firing, she teaches SAP ABAP Programming (CMIS 495/588) once a year.

In addition to classroom teaching, Dr. Moore conducts workshops through the Executive Education division of the SIUE School of Business. Her topics include: Project Scope and Integration, Project Communications Management, Project HR Management, Earned Value Analysis, and Solving the Real Project Mystery – People.

Through her graduate studies in human behavior, industry experience, and studies and teaching in project management, Dr. Moore has identified some major clues to mysterious situations project managers face. Over the past 20 years, she has uncovered missing pieces of the project management puzzle – pieces that are vital to effectively managing projects and project teams. She is presently working on a book in which she shares these clues. As a big fan of Nancy Drew, the book is tentatively titled Solving Project Mysteries! Click here for an excerpt from the introductory chapter.

Dr. Moore’s interest and studies in organizational behavior and HR are reflected in the research that she does. Click here for a list of key publications. Dr. Moore’s stream of research in job burnout positioned her as an expert on burnout in IT personnel, and she has been quoted on this topic in The Boston Globe, Omaha World-Herald, Computerworld, and Harvard Management Update. In the IS research community, Dr. Moore served as Associate Editor at MIS Quarterly from 2004 through 2007 and now serves on the Editorial Board of MIS Quarterly Executive. She is also Senior Editor at The DATABASE for Advances in Information Systems.
