Join the SIUE Alumni Association for the SIUE Alumni Volunteer Day with Habitat for Humanity on Saturday, September 19th!
15 SIUE alumni, family and friends will join together and help Habitat for Humanity at one of their 28 new build sites in the JeffVanderLou Neighborhood in St. Louis. We will work from 8:00am - 4:30pm. We are also collecting a $10 donation from each volunteer which will be given to Habitat for Humanity St. Louis. The Alumni Volunteer Day is the perfect opportunity to reconnect with former classmates and give back to the community. Participants will also receive a free alumni volunteer t-shirt to wear during the event.
Habitat for Humanity volunteers can be skilled (often helping out as crew or task leaders), semi-skilled or just willing to learn! The on-site project managers will direct the work and coach us on safety, but you will not be expected to do something you are not ready to do. All tasks are important to the overall goal.
All volunteers will be required to complete the 2009 Habitat for Humanity St. Louis volunteer waiver. The waiver will need to be submitted to the Alumni Association as soon as possible by faxing it to 618-650-3694 or mailing it to the SIUE Alumni Association, Campus Box 1031, Edwardsville, IL 62026-1031.
PLEASE NOTE that the 15 volunteer slots have been filled.
Frequently Asked Questions

Lunch and water will be provided. Bring work gloves and dress in layers. Wear clothes which can get dirty and stained and study shoes - no sandals, crocs, open toed or heeled shoes!. Bring gatorade, snacks, fruit, hat and towelettes for the porta potties. Bring rain and/or sun protection. - What about tools?
Habitat for Humanity has tools but if you have then, you are welcome to bring a hammer, nail belt, tape measure, pencil, utility knife, chalk line, tin snips, speed square and any hand tools. Safety equipment will be available including gloves, hard hats (when needed), safety goggles, ear protection and dust masks when appropriate. - What will the full day be like?
All volunteers will be on Webster Avenue, just after Sheridan Avenue on the east side of the street at 7:50am. We will turn in our paperwork, sign in and get our ID buttons. Habitat staff will direct us to our house and answer any questions. We will break for lunch at the house leader discretion. After lunch, we will continue our tasks to completion, clean up, and return tools and materials. The work day will end when all of this is done around 3:30-4:30pm. - Will I meet the homeowner?
Yes! Homeowners need 450 hours of sweat equity before they can move in after their house is finished so they will be working hard to get enough hours. Be sure and introduce yourself and take some time to get to know him/her and the family.
